CST300 - Week 1

I'll admit that when I first started my journey toward an online bachelor's degree, I felt both nervous and excited. I couldn't help but wonder how exploring a virtual classroom would compare to the conventional in-person experience; it was both exciting and intimidating. But as the first week of school progressed, I was fascinated by how the virtual learning environment easily connected both students and teachers.

Within one week, covering Module 0 and 1, our cohort engaged in a wide range of learning activities that deepened and broadened our comprehension of the world of the digital classroom. We were given an orientation session, which acted as our entry point into this new experience, before we even started studying the course material. We digitally met our professors and fellow students, and right then, we were put into teams--a concept that was completely foreign to me in an online setting. I was excited and curious at the same time when I realized that these were the peers I would be working on group projects and cooperative tasks with, for most of the course.

One of the assignments for the week was to introduce ourselves on a discussion forum and comment on other peers' posts. I learned a lot about different situations of my classmates. We then had a group assignment of creating a team resume. I really enjoyed this assignment as we discovered the various talents our teammates had, including photo shopping skills and experience in numerous programming languages. We also discovered the amount of creativity and skills my classmates possessed, after looking at some of the work that was submitted on the forum.

This week, our course material took a kick start. We learned about APA style writing, which was new for me since I have learned to write in MLA format. We learned about our school history, its faculty and staff, and the different programs it has to offer. We also connected with our professors and peers, through LinkedIn, Google chat, YouTube, and our blogs. To top it all off, we are starting our first research paper with a 2-page outline.
